OXFORD – The Chenango County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation into a deadly Oxford crash that took place Tuesday evening at a flashing stop sign intersection at East River Road (State Highway 220) and County Road 35.
The incident occurred at about 7:05 p.m. when an SUV operated by a young driver proceeded through a stop along St. Hwy. 220 and impacted the side of another vehicle, described as an old classic car, that was traveling down the hill on County Rt. 35, which does not have a stop sign at the intersection and has the right of way.
According to Chenango County Sheriff Ernest R. Cutting Jr., “It is alleged that on May 21, 2024 at approximately 7 p.m. Raymond L. Smith was traveling westbound on County Road 35 when another vehicle being operated by a juvenile was traveling south bound on State Highway 220 and failed to stop at the intersection, then striking the passenger side of Smith's vehicle.”
“Members of the Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol Division, Detectives Division and Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to render aid. Upon arrival, deputies attempted life saving measures to one of vehicle operators who was ejected from the vehicle. It was later announced that Raymond L. Smith of Oxford, New York had succumbed to his injuries sustained from the motor vehicle accident,” reported Cutting.
