NORWICH — The Hometown Heroes Committee honored 75 local veterans on Friday, Flag Day, with a ceremony to launch the second annual round of banners on display throughout the City of Norwich.
The banners feature current or former service members both living and deceased, who are current or former residents of the Norwich City School District. Included on the banner is the veteran's photo, name, and branch of service on the front and back.
The ceremony began with a welcome message from Hometown Heroes Committee Member and Director of Veterans Services Joe Coe, who took a moment to recognize the service of Charles Edgar Diefenbacher, Jr., a WWII veteran who recently passed away.
"He was one of very few remaining World War II veterans of this country and this county. It was an honor to display his banner in this community last year," said Coe. "Recently, Charlie passed away, but his banner, along with many other veterans of this community who served or are currently serving, will continue to be remembered for their service to this great country and a part of this community."
Attendees were led in the Pledge of Allegiance by Retired United States Army First Class Sergeant Jim Jenkins, and heard an opening prayer by St. Paul's and St. Bartholomew's Churches Deacon Dale Gray.
