NORWICH – After a bye round on Monday, the Norwich Pony League team kicked off its 2024 summer season against Edmeston, who had defeated Oxford on Monday. Edmeston showed up fiery coming off their first game and put on a back-and-forth battle. However, Norwich shut them out in the final two innings to take the tight 7-6 victory.
There was no score until the top of the third inning as Edmeston took the early 2-0 lead. Norwich answered right back and cut the deficit to 2-1. Edmeston went up 3-1 in the fourth with Norwich tallying two in the bottom half of the inning. Both teams scored three runs in the fifth in a tied 6-6 ballgame, going into the latter part of the game. Norwich stood their ground and plated what was the game-winning run as Blayne Sutton touched home plate in the bottom of the sixth inning. Norwich kept Edmeston off the board with solid defense. Sutton had a diving catch in left field and the rest of the defense made great throws to snag runners out.
Norwich also got lucky on a few misplays by Edmeston and scored on wild pitches and passed balls or even got away with stealing home with the defense occupied. Norwich scored seven runs on two hits with both hits coming from Noah Eddy. Aside from Eddy, Gavin Burrell and Brooks Boland both stole three bases in the close win.
