Greene historian shares archived celebrations of the Fourth of July Historian Sharon Davis shared Fourth of July documentation from the Historical Society archives. GREENE — Over the years, many historical events and celebrations have taken place on July 4. These events include, but are not limited to; a service flag celebration, a hospital fundraiser, soldiers’ welcome home party and mother nature’s vengeance. The events all took place in and around the Village of Greene on Independence Day.

Greene Historian Sharon Davis shared Fourth of July documentation from the Historical Society archives. She said one celebration in 1942 was the dedication of the Service Flag.

“It consisted of 200 blue stars and was a vertical banner style well over 12 feet high,” Davis said. “The blue stars were applied on a white flag and then applied to a dark larger banner.”

Another celebration on the Fourth of July was the Grand Old Ball, which took place in the 1950’s. It was held on the village square to raise money for the Greene Hospital. The celebration was also sponsored by the medical staff at the hospital.
