LINCKLAEN – The US National Weather Service in Binghamton has confirmed an additional tornado hit a portion of Chenango County during the latest round of severe thunderstorms.

An EF-1 tornado, with estimated peak winds of 110 mph and width of 250 yards, worked its way along an 8.7 mile path in the Towns of Lincklaen and Otselic around 7 p.m. Monday, July 15.

According to the Weather Service, initial tornadic damage began along Upham Road near Lane Hill in Lincklaen State Forest, then crossed Hyer and Neal Roads.

The storm intensified to a higher EF-1 category along Joe Road. Hundreds of trees were uprooted and snapped in a 200-yard wide area. Damage continued across County Road 13 and Ridge Road as the tornado moved into Bucks Brook State Forest and dropped into the Otselic Valley.

A barn was partially collapsed in Otselic Center. Other structures saw minor roofing or window damage along Highway 26 before the tornado’s path ended along Route 80 in the Town of Otselic.

Other pockets of damage, such as Crumb Hill and parts of South Otselic were consistent with downbursts from the severe line of storms.

The National Weather Service says an all-time record for tornadoes in New York State was set in July, with the state seeing more than double the average yearly number of tornadoes in just one month.

More than 20 tornadoes were confirmed across New York State this month. The state typically sees fewer than 10 each year.
