Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D) is currently one of the two United States senators representing New York State, along with Senator Chuck Schumer (D).
Gillibrand was first appointed in 2008 and assumed office on January 26, 2009. She replaced former Senator Hillary Clinton, who was chosen to be former President Barack Obama’s Secretary of State. Gillibrand also ran and was elected in 2012 and 2018. She is seeking a third senate term.
In her first term in the Senate, Gillibrand worked to repeal former President Bill Clinton’s 1993 “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which permitted LGBTQ service members to be discharged from service if they disclosed their sexual orientation. Gillibrand also passed the 9/11 Responder and Survivor Health Funding Correction Act, which ensured that first responders and survivors of the September 11 terrorist attacks received adequate healthcare. Recently, she passed the first federal law to make gun trafficking a crime.
