NORWICH — The 2nd annual Upstate Renaissance Faire saw hundreds of attendees over the weekend, who came to enjoy a wide variety of vendors, entertainment, food, and more.
The two-day event was held at the Chenango County Fairgrounds, stepping the area back in time to 1300 to 1600 A.D. England. Many visitors dressed in Renaissance-era clothing, and had the opportunity to be judged by the King himself in the Royal Garb Contest.
The festival included 56 craft vendors, nine food vendors, and activities such as axe throwing by Upstate Entertainment and dueling games by the Southern Tier Hoplological Society.
There was also plenty of entertainment to enjoy, including Celtic Magic shows with Daniel Greenwolf and Bella, dancing by the Happy Haggs and WANAH Dance Company, Celtic harp music performed by Matthew Schwarz, singing by the Sirens of Circe, interactive storytelling by Thimbleberry the Woodsprite, and combat and equestrian demonstrations by SCA Fencing and Heavy Fighters.
Perhaps the biggest draw to this year's faire was demonstrations by Silver Knights Productions – Spur of the Moment Jousting. Three knights – Sir Guy, Lady Mary, and Lady Maeve – competed in a variety of challenges on horseback, followed by jousting. After a heated competition, Sir Guy and Lady Mary dismounted their steeds and settled their score in a sword fight, with Lady Mary victorious.
