OTSELIC – The Chenango County Sheriff's Office is investigating a driveway accident following the death of a two-year-old child on Wednesday.

Chenango County Sheriff Ernest R. Cutting confirmed the investigation was still ongoing but said Thursday morning the incident appeared to be a tragic vehicle accident that had occurred in a residential driveway.

Cutting said, “This was an emergency at a private residence. It was an unfortunate accident. It was a tragedy.” Cutting said he and many of his officers had families and he expressed sympathy to the victim's family.

“This is a terrible thing. We feel for the family and our thoughts are with them,” he said.

Lt. Jeffrey Barton said emergency crews responded to the scene at about 1 p.m. Wednesday to 2558 State Highway 26 in Otselic. He said first responders did everything they could, administering care and rushing the child to hospital but the victim was pronounced dead when they arrived.

Cutting said the incident was difficult for all of those involved and commended responders.
