OXFORD - This fall, 6 On The Square — Oxford’s acoustic listening room — will honor some of the best women singer-songwriters touring on today’s folk/Americana music circuit, and the venue also will look to its future with a N.Y. Harvest Fundraiser.
On Sept. 27, Alice Howe and Freebo will return after several well-received performances in recent years. Howe grew up with a treasure trove of influences in her parents’ record collection, from Muddy Waters, Mississippi John Hurt and Taj Mahal to the folk of Joan Baez and Kate and Anna McGarrigle to the rock of James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne. Freebo is a prolific Los Angeles musician who has accompanied Bonnie Raitt, Maria Muldaur, Jackson Browne, Ringo Starr and Dr. John.
Crys Matthews, another familiar face to 6OTS, performs on Oct. 5. A southeastern North Carolina native, Matthews blends Americana, folk, jazz, blues, bluegrass and funk into music steeped in traditional melodies and punctuated by honest, original lyrics. She has been compared to everyone from Toshi Reagon and Tracy Chapman to Ruthie Foster.
Appearing onstage on Oct. 12, Carolann Solebello and Hope Dunbar offer their heartfelt and humorous stories in song. Solebello is best known to folk audiences as a founding member of Americana trio Red Molly, and she tours both as a solo performer and with modern folk quartet No Fuss and Feathers. Dunbar is a three-time Kerrville New Folk Finalist and has been recognized for her songwriting by the American Songwriter magazine lyrics contest.
6OTS welcomes another two-fer on Oct. 26 with Danielle Miraglia and Marc Douglas Berardo. Miraglia performs her modern style of blues with a strong steady thumb on an old Gibson and an infectious stomp-box rhythm with tunes ranging from heartfelt to socially conscious. Berardo’s songs mine the feelings and lessons gleaned from real-life characters and situations in a style that has been compared to James Taylor, Jimmy Buffett and Guy Clark.
Lynne Hanson will wrap up the Songwriting Women series on Nov. 9. Hanson is an Ottawa-based, Americana songwriter known for her high energy roots guitar-driven live performances that have earned her two Canadian Folk Music Awards.
The fall season will open on Sept. 13 with Jenner Fox — a folk singer-songwriter, storyteller and second-generation river guide. He travels from show to show on a cargo bike whenever possible, guides whitewater rivers all over the world, teaches music camps and searches for songs.
On Nov. 16, Dana Cooper will bring his mix of folk, rock, country and Americana to 6OTS’s stage. Over his 50-plus-year career, Cooper has recorded more than 30 albums and continues to tour actively. His 32nd studio album, “The Ghost of Tucumcari,” was released earlier this year.
6OTS favorite Joe Jencks returns for a special holiday show on Dec. 22. Jencks is an internationally touring musician, award-winning songwriter and celebrated vocalist who performed as one-third of the folk supergroup Brother Sun.
Purchase tickets at 6onthesquare.org or call 607-843-OTS6 (6876) to make a reservation. Doors open one hour before the start of performances. Concerts also will be streamed live online for $10; more information at 6onthesquare.org.
Also this fall, the N.Y. Harvest Fundraiser on Sept. 22 will feature foods from local producers as well as New York state wines, beers and hard ciders. George Anderson will provide background music. Tickets are $25.
6OTS also is funded in part by Earlville Opera House's Arts in the Community Grants Program, made possible by the New York State Senate with support of the Office of Gov. Kathy Hochul, and administered by the New York State Council on the Arts. Sponsors for this fall’s 6OTS season are Chenango County Tourism and Patocka's Restaurant in Greene.
