OWEGO – The Norwich Purple Tornado football team traveled to Owego on Friday in the league opener. Coming off a tough loss to Horseheads, Norwich dropped its second straight game 28-6. Owego proved themselves as a run-heavy team, racking up 310 rushing yards, which caught Norwich off guard.

“It was a good game and was a one score game until the end,” Norwich head coach Mike Chrystie said. “We played hard, but just couldn’t take care of the ball. It’s hard to overcome four turnovers.”

Chrystie’s team put up six points early in the second quarter. Norwich started the scoring drive at the 23 yard line, where Steven Dowdall found Mitchell Collins for a six yard gain before a few hand-offs to Kaden Downey and Braden Hagenbuch. Norwich continued to run down the field and then on a fourth and two at Owego’s six yard line, Dowdall handed the ball to Hagenbuch for the score. The extra-point was blocked by the defense.

Norwich was down 14-6 at the half and Owego added two more scores in the third and fourth quarters to seal the victory.

Norwich (1-2) hosts Sus Valley on Friday. It will be the first home varsity football game after renovations to the stadium over the summer.
