6 On The Square Continues Fall Season With Alice Howe & Freebo
Published: September 26th, 2024

OXFORD - 6 On The Square in Oxford continues its 18th season with a concert from Alice Howe and Freebo at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27.

Howe grew up in Newton, Mass., with a treasure trove of influences in her parents’ record collection, from Muddy Waters, Mississippi John Hurt and Taj Mahal to the folk of Joan Baez and Kate and Anna McGarrigle to the rock of James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne.

Freebo is a prolific Los Angeles musician who has accompanied Bonnie Raitt, Maria Muldaur, Jackson Browne, Ringo Starr and Dr. John. When he heard Howe play, a friendship and musical partnership began. Together, they have recorded and release two full-length albums: 2019’s “Visions” and 2023’s “Circumstance.”

On “Circumstance,” produced by Freebo and recorded at iconic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Howe displays her vocal prowess and introspective writing in abundance, mining both her heart and her musical tastes for a journey across an Americana soundscape dotted with blues, folk, country, soul and rock.

As an old soul inside a 30-something millennial, Howe puts her stamp on Americana’s venerable strands with 10 standout originals evoking both the classic singer-songwriters and the seminal music that once filled airwaves, roadhouses and juke joints.

Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door; purchase at 6onthesquare.org or call 607-843-OTS6 (6876) to make a reservation. Doors open one hour before the start of performances. Concerts also will be streamed live online for $10; more information at 6onthesquare.org.
