NORWICH — In May 2023, the Norwich City School District (NCSD) sent letters to inform parents and students that the upcoming NCSD 2024 year would include new regulations to ban cell phones during school hours.
With the arrival of those letters, there were concerns from parents for the communication and safety of their children. Nevertheless, the new ban on phones was implemented and the start of the school year proved to be less obstructive than previous years.
“I am pleased with the preparation and planning of our leadership team over the last ten months, that so far have yielded positive outcomes,” said Superintendent Scott Ryan.
“I remain optimistic that less student distraction will lead to higher student engagement,” Ryan said. “I am proud of our students and families for embracing and supporting our efforts as we continue to strive for a united approach that ultimately lifts all student experience,”
NCSD Principal Jacob Roe said, “Since the start of the school year, we have not received any concerns or complaints from parents regarding the phone-free environment. This has been reassuring and suggests families understand the benefits and support the change.”
“On opening day, there were a few high schoolers who came to the office to voice their opinions,” he said. “But everyone followed the procedure.”
“Teachers have not observed a noticeable increase in fidgety or disgruntled behavior, instead, students seem to be adjusting well,” said Elly Powers, NCSD Associate Principal.
