NEW BERLIN — Sunday, Sept. 29, football fans enjoyed an exciting game between Milford Academy and Putnam Science Academy (Connecticut) at the Unadilla Valley Central School field until nearing game end, when an overheated brawl took place between the two teams.
Putnam officials admitted the fight was started by their team but said players were provoked, calling the match out of control saying cheap shots and a lack of security contributed to the situation.
As the fight unfolded between the teams, coaches and other officials scrambled to restrain players and parents called police. By the time officers arrived 30 minutes later, the fight was over and the Putnam team was leaving on a bus.
No major injuries were reported and no arrests made.
Putnam Academy Director of Athletics Tom Espinosa said, "Our team started the fight but it was caused by a cheap shot to our quarterback and throughout the game there were three scuffles, little fights, there was no control."
Milford Coach Chaplick said, “30 seconds left and our defensive end made a tackle and it was on the sideline and he got a penalty.” Chaplick added, “He just over ran the play, so they gave him a flag and when they gave him the flag, the other team jumped on our team.”
