NORWICH — The Liberty Resources Help Restore Hope Center will be hosting their first annual candlelight vigil from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 26 in Norwich's East Park to help raise awareness about what domestic violence is, how it affects individuals and families, and what resources are available for those in a domestic violence situation.

"The purpose of the event is a remembrance of individuals who have lost their lives due to domestic violence," said Liberty Resources Child and Family Services Divisional Director Theresa Davis. "Individuals are going to share their story about how domestic violence affected their lives or the lives of their children."

She said so far they have approximately four individuals who will be speaking at the event. Anyone who wishes to share their story as well can contact Liberty Resources at 607-334-7779 ext. 21.

Additionally, attendees will also be able to light candles in remembrance of those who have lost their lives due to domestic violence, as well as poster boards where they can write the names of loved ones lost to or affected by domestic violence.

"The comment now is they’re saying everyone knows someone. Years ago you would say that about a particular disease, like cancer. Everybody knew someone. Unfortunately, you can say that about domestic violence now," said Davis.

Attendees can also show their support by writing letters of encouragement to individuals currently residing in local safe dwellings and shelters.
