OXFORD — 6 On The Square, Oxford’s acoustic listening room, continues this fall’s Women Songwriter Series with a concert from Lynne Hanson at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 9. The series highlights some of the best women performers on the folk/acoustic circuit today.
Hanson is an Ottawa-based Americana songwriter known for her high-energy, roots guitar-driven live performances with an authenticity that's been described as both entertaining and disarming.
Too tough for folk and too blues-influenced for country, Hanson’s brand of porch music with a little red dirt can turn on a dime from a sunshine, blue-sky ballad to a full-on thunderstorm of gritty Americana swamp from one song to the next. Her music has garnered her the nickname “Canada’s Queen of Americana,” with comparisons to Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch.
Hanson has released nine studio albums and two books of poetry over her 18-year solo career. She has toured extensively across North America, Europe, and the UK, and she has appeared at leading international festivals such as Take Root (the Netherlands), Glasgow Americana (Scotland), Maverick Festival (UK), Kerrville Folk Festival (US), and Winnipeg Folk Festival (Canada). She has also toured as support for Grammy-nominated artists like Gretchen Peters, Steve Forbert and Albert Lee.
She released her 10th studio album, “Just A Poet,” earlier this year, and it has been nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Album of the Year.
Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door; purchase at 6onthesquare.org or call 607-843-OTS6 (6876) to make a reservation. Doors open one hour before the start of performances. Concerts also will be streamed live online for $10; more information at 6onthesquare.org.
