CHENANGO COUNTY – The first round of Section IV volleyball sectionals were underway on Tuesday evening. Harpursville/Afton and Bainbridge-Guilford represented Class C while Oxford is in Class D for volleyball, despite being in Class C for other sports. All three teams fell in their match-ups by scores of 3-0.
Oxford was the fourth seed in the Class D tournament, where they had the home match against Newfield. B-G was the fifth seed and played at Trumanburg and eighth seeded Harpursville/Afton played at Tioga.
Oxford kept up with Newfield, especially in the end of each set but came up short overall. The scores were Newfield 25-23, 25-22, 25-22. Oxford only led in the first set after many ties and took two lead changes. Both teams battled with good volleys and each set and point kept teams and fans on their toes for the entire match. Oxford Coach Dean Curtis, along with assistant Kristin Seiler, was proud of the team for staying close but said that Newfield was on their game and didn’t make many mistakes.
