OXFORD - The Oxford Memorial Library is buzzing with activity this month, offering a variety of engaging events for all ages and interests.
From local history talks to craft nights, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you're looking to spark your imagination, learn something new, or connect with your community, the library is the place to be. Here's a look at some of the exciting events you won't want to miss.
At 1 p.m. On Saturday November 16, Vicky House will be doing a talk on the history of the New York State Veterans’ Home in Oxford.
Join us for “What Will Poor Betsy Do? – The Story of the First Veterans’ Home in Oxford.”
The New York State Veterans Home in Oxford was originally called the WRC (Woman's Relief Corps) Home and was the first of its kind in New York State.
A poem, "What Will Poor Betsy Do?” written by a Civil War veteran, was recited at a National Encampment in 1886 which sparked the need and desire to build a home where a Civil War veteran and his wife could spend their days together and be cared for.
The home opened in 1897 to veterans, their wives, widows and mothers along with army nurses from New York State.
Come hear the whole story and enjoy some of the old images and reports about the first home that was built here 128 years ago. Refreshments will be served and a donation jar supporting Warn Ten-Broeck Cemetery Association will be near the door.
The Oxford Memorial Library is also having two craft nights this month. Family Craft Night will be on Friday November 15th at 4 p.m. Patrons of all ages are invited to come and learn how to make Finger-Knit-Friends. There will be instructions to make a snake or butterfly friend out of yarn.
Our Adult Craft Night is Thursday November 21 at 6 p.m. and we will be making Book Page Wreaths. Using discarded library books, attendee will get to make a book lovers’ dream wreath, and there will be seasonal add-on to make the wreaths festive for the holiday season.
