ALBANY - Assemblyman Joseph Angelino (R,C-Norwich) is applauding Gov. Hochul for signing into law a bill he sponsored that will rename parts of the state highway system as the SP4 Herman Emil Anders, Jr. Memorial Bridge.
Specialist Anders took part in Operation Junction City and was a decorated soldier, earning honors such as the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and National Defense.
Specialist Anders exposed himself to highly accurate small-arms attacks and rocket fire to point out enemy targets while directing his unit to withdraw to the secondary position. SP4 Anders engaged several enemy soldiers before being overwhelmed by enemy forces. He is buried in the Sylvan Lawn Cemetery in Chenango County.
“Specialist Anders is an American hero, plain and simple, and naming this bridge after him is the least we can do as a thankful state and nation. I am very proud to be the Assembly sponsor of the legislation responsible for renaming this bridge. I also want to thank the Senate sponsor, my good friend Sen. Oberacker, whose hard work is greatly appreciated. I truly hope this bridge serves as a timeless memory of Specialist Anders.
We must always remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation, and this act of renaming a bridge to honor Specialist Anders should work to do just that,” said Angelino.
Assemblyman Angelino represents the 121st Assembly District, which includes parts of Broome County, Delaware County, Madison County, Chenango County and Otsego County.
