Chenango County Sheriff Arrests Two People For Breaking Into Norwich Business

NORWICH - The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two people on multiple charges, including burglary, petit larceny, criminal mischief, and conspiracy after allegedly breaking into a Norwich business.

Michael B. VanDerWeert, 38, of Guilford, and Dawn M. Cavanaugh, 47, of North Carolina, were arrested on Nov. 12, following an investigation into a burglary at a business in the Town of Norwich. Deputies responded to a complaint that someone had broken into a building and stolen multiple items.

During the investigation, deputies identified two suspects and obtained information about a suspect vehicle. The next day, a vehicle matching the description was located at a business in the Village of Oxford. Sheriff deputies identified the occupants as VanDerWeert and Cavanaugh.

Both suspects were taken into custody and transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, where they were charged with burglary in the third degree, a class D felony; petit larceny; fourth degree criminal mischief; and conspiracy fifth degree; misdemeanors.

VanDerWeert and Cavanaugh were released on appearance tickets and are scheduled to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

All charges are accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
