CHENANGO COUNTY - The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Norwich and the surrounding areas, especially to the south of the county, as a significant winter storm is expected to impact the region starting Thursday afternoon through Friday morning.

Residents are advised to prepare for heavier snow in higher elevation areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the storm will begin with rain transitioning to snow Thursday afternoon. The snowfall is expected to taper off by Friday afternoon.

The southern half of Chenango County is expected to be more heavily impacted by this storm. Norwich itself is forecast to receive between 2 to 4 inches of snow, while surrounding high-elevation areas may see significantly greater accumulation.

The service reported possible snowfall rates of 1 to 3-plus inches an hour may occur at peak. High elevations are likely to see heavy snowfall, with totals potentially ranging to 12 or more inches in the worst hit isolated areas.

The snow will be wet and heavy, with a high liquid content. This will make shoveling difficult and increase the risk of damage to tree limbs and power lines. Slippery and slushy road conditions are anticipated during peak snowfall hours, with visibility reduced during periods of intense snowfall.

Wet snow combined with breezy northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph in elevated areas, could lead to scattered power outages caused by downed tree branches and wires.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm. If driving is essential, proceed with caution and allow extra time. Take breaks while shoveling heavy, wet snow to avoid overexertion. Prepare for potential power outages by ensuring you have flashlights, batteries, and necessary supplies.
