NORWICH ― The City of Norwich is seeking candidates for appointment to the Common Council as the Ward 6 alderperson, for a partial term that will run from December 21, 2024 to December 31, 2025. The board seat has a vote on the common council.
The vacancy for a a seat on the board comes after the announced resignation of Ward 6 Alderman Robert Jeffrey. He is moving out of Ward 6, making him ineligible to serve.
No prior experience in politics or local government is required, said City of Norwich Mayor Brian Doliver. However, candidates must be a resident of Ward 6, at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, and not a convicted felon.
Doliver said the aldermen act as the governing body of the city, and also serve as a contact for residents of their ward.
"They are the governing body of the common council. They control the purse strings of the common council, so they have to make those decisions," he explained. "We have two meetings a month: we have a joint committee meeting and a common council meeting. We would ask anybody interested would be willing to come to those meetings. And of course you're also there to answer any questions from constituents in your ward, any concerns, questions, comments."
