GILBERTSVILLE – The Butternut Valley Grange secured first place for its 2023-24 Community Service report, submitted to the New York State Grange in September. The award was presented during the 152nd annual session at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center in Oswego on Sunday, Oct. 27.

The comprehensive report detailed numerous community service initiatives undertaken by Grange members throughout the year. These included making the Grange Hall available to other organizations, hosting events such as defensive driving courses, health programs, and the annual "Breakfast with Santa." This year's breakfast is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 14, with reservations due by Dec. 6. Additionally, the Grange introduced a Holiday Craft Fair featuring vendors for last-minute shopping. Members are also participating in the "Holiday of Lights" display at the Otsego County Fairgrounds in Morris, open on Dec. 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 22, and 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. each night.

The report showcased over 50 photographs highlighting the involvement of approximately 60 members, contributing more than 1,900 volunteer hours. Achieving first place at the state level qualified the report for national competition. At the 158th National Grange Convention in Bettendorf, Iowa, the Butternut Valley Grange received the third-place award, representing the New York State Grange.
