GREENE - The Sherwood Hotel, located at 25 Genesee Street in Greene, maintains its historic status while also offering a modern approach as an Airbnb.
The hotel offers overnight stay and venue setting for weddings, banquets, reunions and other special events.
Through the years, the Sherwood Hotel has had its challenges, from numerous fires destroying the entire hotel or parts of it, reconstruction, renovations, many owners, and at times, closed doors.
Owner Alan Trider takes all of the challenges in stride and said as he was searching through properties for sale, it was the beauty of the hotel that took him by surprise.
"I fell in love with the building immediately," said Trider. "It's so charming and although I knew nothing about it, I was quite intrigued right off the start."
He said it reminds him of downtown Disneyland, a place he knows very well as he is from California. During his walk of the property, he said he fell in love with it even more.
"I have an affinity for buildings and properties and found the Greene community welcoming," he said. "Almost everyone has a story about the hotel and most have worked here or know someone that has."
"We have 21 rooms available for overnight stays that include flat screens, refrigerators, microwaves, desks, and heating and air conditioning to make the stay very comfortable," said Trider.
"Weddings and birthday parties have used the rooms, reserving an entire blocked out section for their many guests," he added.
He said venue packages for rooms are very reasonable and competitive with the surrounding area.
"Standard rooms are $134 a night and a room with two queen beds is $144. a night," Trider said. "Our suites are $199 a night and this New Year's Eve we're having a special of two days at $150 a night. If a guest only wants one night we're offering $99."
"Also, because we are an Airbnb, we do not have someone at the desk at all times," he added. "But if you call 607-875-0466, our day manager Chelsea Eldred or night manager Greg Cobb will be available to assist you with reservations."
"We don't have a restaurant but do have a bar on the main floor that is available for our guests," he said. "We know a restaurant would enhance our building, but right now there are a variety of options for breakfast, lunch and dinner in and around the area.
Trider explained some guests bring a caterer in for events but he realizes the cost of catering can be very expensive so he offers the use of the kitchen which accommodates 80 for sit down.
"The downstairs of the hotel has a tap room and full kitchen, full bar and accommodates 55 people," said Trider.
"Although I'm not a Greene resident, I'm in touch with the community and have met some wonderful people," he said. "If I'm on the Patio, they come up and say 'I've always wanted to see inside' and we have great conversations."
"It means a lot to me to be a part of the community, and I love every shared story," Trider said. "I go to many community events and it's important to me that the community is proud of The Sherwood."
He said many years in real estate have given him an understanding of owning and maintaining buildings, molding them to the needs of the community and remaining flexible to change things up when the time is ready.
Trider owns numerous properties and has found great joy in his 53 years in the real estate business. He takes pride in investing in historical buildings and spends much of his time between the Sherwood Airbnb and two properties he owns in the historic Gettysburg area, Middle Creek Retreat and The Middle Creek Manor in Pennsylvania.
