MCDONOUGH — In the early hours of December 28, the McDonough Fire Department blocked State Highway 220 and Creek Road as volunteer firefighters, along with Pharsalia, Oxford, Smithville, Preston and Greene Fire Departments came together to contain the house fire on the Brandt family farm.

McDonough Fire Chief Kenny Thompson said they had the fire under control in two hours and worked seven hours along with Chenango County's fire investigation unit, Greene EMS, McDonough Town Highway and the American Red Cross.

"We're fortunate that the family made it out of the house safely," said Thompson. "We're truly sorry for the family's loss."

Thompson said the fire is under investigation by Chenango County Fire but last he knew, the cause was undetermined.

“The Brandts' home and cherished belongings, farm animals and pets were taken in the fire, leaving them with nothing but the clothes they were wearing,” said sister-in-law and Gofund me Organizer Jennifer Zicot.

Zicot posted the Gofundme account which be found at www.gofundme.com/f/support-the-brandt-family-after-fire-loss.

She said as they begin to rebuild, the road ahead will be long and challenging. Funds raised will go directly towards temporary housing and basic necessities, rebuilding their home and replacing essential belongings and helping to restore their farm and care for surviving animals.

Zicot said the Brandt family have always been the first to lend a hand to others in need, especially with the 4-H organization.

“Now, they are the ones who need help,” Zicot added. “No contribution is too small—whether it’s a donation, sharing this campaign, or keeping them in your thoughts and prayers, everything is deeply appreciated.”

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County 4-H Educator Erica Clark said Shannon Brandt is a dedicated club leader with the Curious Kids 4-H Club and was awarded the 4-H Lifetime Volunteer Award at a recent achievement day.

The Brandts and Zicot posted on social media they are filled with gratitude and thank everyone for their kindness and generosity in helping their family rebuild their lives after such a heartbreaking loss.
