SIDNEY- Sidney Federal Credit Union recently made a $1,000 donation to DCMO BOCES in support of the Regional Spelling Bee, which is sponsored by The Daily Star along with ONC BOCES and DCMO BOCES. Martha Ryan, DCMO BOCES Enrichment Coordinator and Regional Spelling Bee Coordinator, accepted the check from “Sprout,” the SFCU mascot, at the SFCU headquarters building in Sidney.

The 23rd Regional Spelling Bee will be held at SUNY Oneonta’s Goodrich Theater on Saturday, February 1 starting at 10:00 am, with  26 local school champions competing for the regional  title. The event is open to the public, and DCMO BOCES will also be providing a livestream online. Refreshments will be served, and SFCU’s "Sprout” will be on hand for a photo opportunity
with competitors and others in attendance.

The winner of the Regional Spelling Bee will go on to compete against more than 200 other spellers from around the country and the world at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which this year is celebrating its centennial year. That event will take place in late May at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, outside of Washington, D.C. Last year, Nyarah Garver, a then-7th grade student at Windham-Ashland-Jewett Central School, earned the title and the trip to the nationals after correctly spelling “disaffected” in the 10th round of the regional competition.
