NORWICH – The Norwich Purple Tornado girls basketball team hosted rivals Oneonta for a Saturday STAC matchup at Jack Jones Gymnasium. Norwich picked up their fourth win in a row with a 58-46 win against the Yellow Jackets.
Both teams battled from the start with Norwich holding the overall edge throughout the contest, showing strength on both ends of the court. Oneonta fought to tie the game in the second quarter but Norwich pushed through to lead by 11 at the break with great efforts by Kerragan Reid, Josey Ryan, and Emma Urgo offensively and great defense from Alivia Burrell and Brynley Ryan. Norwich also had a great game from the free throw line, making 13 of 18 attempts at 72 percent overall.
After a great performance by the Norwich cheerleaders at halftime, Norwich’s lead started to slim down as Oneonta held them without a field goal until halfway through the third quarter. Then, the Purple Tornado were able to go back up by nine points, holding the Yellow Jackets to just those seven opening points after the break. Norwich had a 16 point lead to start the fourth quarter. Urgo helped secure the victory in the final eight minutes of the contest as well as the good efforts defensively.
