CHENANGO COUNTY - In the early hours of December 28, 2024, multiple fire departments worked together to contain a house fire on the Brandt family farm in McDonough. The home and all belongings, including farm animals and pets, were lost.
The McDonough Fire Department, along with units from Pharsalia, Oxford, Smithville, Preston, and Greene, battled the flames for several hours.
With the family left with nothing but the clothes they were wearing, community members have mobilized to offer support. Several community groups reached out to help the family including local 4-H students. Students recently organized a fundraising effort to provide much-needed assistance.
On February 15, the Chenango County 4-H held a fundraiser to assist the family.
The event took place at the Norwich Tractor Supply and welcomed participation from local residents, businesses, and 4-H members.
"The fundraiser included a bake sale, and donation drive, all organized by 4-H members who wanted to make a meaningful difference," said Chenango County Cooperative Extension (CCE) 4-H Program Animal Science and Agriculture Educator Victoria Ryan.
"The efforts were met with extraordinary generosity, raising over $1,000 for the affected family. Funds raised will go directly to the family to help them rebuild their lives after the devastating loss of their home and belongings," said Ryan.
“We are so proud of our 4-H members and the community for stepping up to help a family in need. This event is a perfect example of the 4-H spirit of community service and caring," she said. "The generosity shown was a reminder of the strength of our community."
The family was thankful, sharing their gratitude and relief for the compassion and support the community offered during this difficult time.
Ryan noted Chenango County 4-H is committed to fostering youth development and encouraging its members to be responsible citizens.
"This fundraiser was just one of many examples of how the 4-H program empowers young people to make a positive impact in their communities," Ryan added. "Extensive appreciation to the Hidden Ponds Horse Lovers and Ribbon Wranglers Clubs for all their efforts putting this event on."
