OXFORD — The Oxford Memorial Library, located at 8 Fort Hill Park in Oxford, will be hosting their Family Craft Night at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12. Attendees will learn how to make tin art pieces inspired by Mexican folk art.
"In some traditional folk art it would be thicker sheets of tin, but for our craft purposes we’re going to use tin foil and like a paper board or cardboard as our backing. Then we’ll use some sort of blunt object, like either a dull pencil or the back of something, to emboss our designs into the foil," explained Oxford Memorial Library Director Gillian Mulder.
"There’s different methods; there’s relief methods or embossing to create those different textures, and you can either make it a very detailed design or something more simplistic. Really however the person wants depending on their skill level or age level."
Additionally, art supplies will be provided to color the pieces as well as string to make the projects a hangable display piece.
"We’ll use the markers or possibly paints to add color. I was inspired by some Mexican folk art where they use very bright colors in their motifs. But once again, I always let people have free will of what they want to do," said Mulder. "So there will be every color of the rainbow available to be used, and it’ll be really easy for anyone who has never done it before or is just looking for a quick craft with the kids."
"We’ll have other embellishments to add like beads or extra string so it can be hung up. Since they will be mounted on the cardboard or paper board, it could be almost like a tile," she added.
The Family Craft Night is free to attend and no prior registration is required. Adults are welcome to come alone or bring along kids to enjoy the craft. All supplies will be provided.
The Oxford Memorial Library hosts Family Craft Night every month. Previously, Mulder said they would fit them into the schedule where they could, but now they will be hosting the craft nights on the second Wednesday of each month.
In the past, Family Craft Nights have included projects such as beaded heart suncatchers for Valentine's Day, pinecone bird feeders, snowflake ornaments, finger-knit friends, and more.
The library also hosts monthly adult craft nights, which have included projects like teacup bird feeders, book page wreaths, yarn Christmas trees, and more in the past.
