NORWICH — During a recent Chenango County Board of Supervisors meeting, officials authorized the collection of additional mortgage recording tax revenue to be allocated to the departmental personnel and expenses in the county clerk's office.
Funds in the amount of $34,547.56 were authorized for transfer to create an appropriation account for the senior recording clerk position.
The board of supervisors passed the measure to hire for the position, except Smyrna Supervisor Michael Khoury, who didn’t agree and voted in opposition.
“I do listen and try to understand the boards plight, maybe I’m not being persuasive enough,” Khoury said. “Our taxes are very high and I’m just looking for some fiscal discipline.”
Khoury shared concerns regarding the permanent expensive position and considered a hiring freeze should be in place.
He said in the last couple of years, they have hired about a hundred new employees and he doesn’t want to create more business.
