NORWICH – Over the weekend, the Norwich High School Archery Team competed in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) New York State tournament, held in Syracuse, NY. The team finished fifth out of nine teams.
Senior Jacob Dowdall won the tournament overall with a score of a 289 out of 300 points and was the top finisher amongst 558 students from 39 schools. Dowdall also received a $2000 college scholarship on behalf of NASP.
Aside from Dowdall’s top finish, Emilia Pepe and Joseph Towndrow also qualified for the NASP National Bullseye Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky in May. Pepe finished second in the High School girls’ division while Towndrow came in seventh in the boys’ division.
The entire Norwich High School team, which features Dowdall, Pepe, Towndrow, Jonah Adams, Brody Palmere, Maria Miranda Cruz, Sophia Zheng, Caylee McCarthy, Averie Fink, Dan Smith, Ryan Smith, and Matilena Merritt, took second in the Virtual New York IBO/3D State Tournament and will also be attending the national tournament.
In the middle school IBO division, Nick Mitchell, Allison Wightman, and Nevaeh Fowlston have qualified for the IBO National tournament. Mitchell took fourth place and first overall amongst the seventh grade boys’ with a 256. Wightman came in fifth out of 40 middle school girls’ and second amongst seventh grade girls’ with a 251. Fowlston finished 10th and sixth out of the eighth grade girls’ with a score of a 238.
The Norwich Middle school team consisted of: Mitchell, Wightman, Fowlston, Cullen Pepe, Lily Towndrow, Brooke Slater, Joey Portelli, Emmah Dewey, and Wesley Gould. Each archer achieved a new personal best at the tournament.
