Celebrating Public Health: National Public Health Week is April 7 to 13

CHENANGO COUNTY - Public Health is vital to the well-being of our communities, and National Public Health Week (NPHW), April 7-13, 2025, provides a timely opportunity to reflect on the critical role it plays in creating healthier environments and improving quality of life.

Since 1995, this week-long observance has drawn attention to public health's many contributions, and the 30th-anniversary theme, "It Starts Here," emphasizes the importance of everyone’s role in building healthier communities.

This year, we are highlighting the power of community partnerships—the foundation of public health progress. Our local leaders, residents, organizations, businesses, and healthcare providers have come together to tackle public health challenges, from improving access to health services to promoting healthy lifestyles. Together, we are making an impactful difference in improving the lives of Chenango County residents.

On behalf of the thousands of residents of Chenango County, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many community partners who have played a key role in advancing health and well-being. Throughout National Public Health Week 2025, we celebrate the ongoing efforts of schools, hospitals, nonprofits, businesses, and local organizations that contribute to improving public health in our area. While we continue to grow and work toward our health goals, the collaboration and support of these diverse partners are invaluable as we strive to create a healthier, more equitable community for all.

What is Public Health?
Public health aims to improve the health of entire populations, focusing on preventing health problems before they start. Unlike the healthcare system, which provides services to individuals, public health works on a broader scale—identifying patterns, promoting health policies, and creating programs that benefit everyone. It's the work that happens behind the scenes, ensuring clean water, safe environments, and access to essential health services, so we all live healthier lives.

Public Health in Action:
As part of this celebration, Chenango County Public Health will be partnering with the Chenango County Planning Department for a community clean-up event on May 3rd in Norwich. Public health staff will be focusing on cleaning up Weiler Park and Kurt Beyer Park. The Planning department staff will be partnering with the Greenway to clean up the River Trails corridor. If you would like to volunteer to help the Chenango County Planning Department during the Greenway River Trails Cleanup on May 3rd, please contact them at 607-337-1640 or email them at planning@chenangocountyny.gov. This effort demonstrates how public health extends beyond traditional healthcare, focusing on creating healthy environments for all. It’s a reminder that public health is about working together to improve our physical surroundings and foster a sense of community.
