CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango County District Attorney’s Office recently presented multiple cases to a grand jury, leading to indictments for violent offenses, drug trafficking, weapons charges, and other crimes.

James D. Houghtaling was indicted for first-degree criminal contempt, a class E felony; second-degree menacing, class A misdemeanor; and second-degree harassment, a violation.

On March 7, 2025, in the City of Norwich, Houghtaling allegedly violated a court's order of protection by traveling to a private residence and brandished what appeared to be a shotgun, placing an individual in fear of serious physical injury or death.

Michael P. McWeeney was indicted on second degree criminal possession of a weapon; second-degree burglary, both class C felonies; third-degree burglary; and third-degree grand larceny, both class D felonies; and second-degree criminal contempt, a class A misdemeanor.

Prosecutors allege that in January 2025, in the Town of Afton, McWeeney unlawfully entered a dwelling with intent to commit a crime, stole firearms worth more than $3,000, and violated a family court protection order.

Morgan T. Stockdale was indicted on seven charges relating to weapons and drugs, including the top counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class C felony; and third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class B felony.
