NORWICH - NBT Bank is pleased to announce that the work of Carl M. Houghton is the newest artwork to be displayed on its Wall of Art at the bank’s headquarters in downtown Norwich.

Houghton is a well-established regional painter in Upstate New York and a member of the Chenango Arts Council, NBT’s partner in presenting the Wall of Art.

“The creative process, by nature, is not merely a technical exercise, and I strive to accept unplanned direction changes as the painting evolves,” said Houghton. “Painting immediately transforms me once I am in my studio and away from the trappings of a time-scheduled life. That is the power, and beauty, of art.”

Houghton is a color-blind painter but does not let that hamper his craft, instead using it as another way to expand his comfort zone and shape him into the artist he is.

He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Syracuse University and his Master of Fine Arts in Art Education from SUNY New Paltz. Following his education, Houghton spent 30 years as a high school art teacher and as a leading child enrichment and adult education coursework. He is now a full-time painter.

“Carl has been integral to the Arts Council for years, holding exhibits and teaching classes. We are thrilled at his new works and to share them through the NBT Wall of Art,” said Alecia O’Neill, Executive Director of the Chenango Arts Council.

Houghton’s artwork will be displayed until the end of July.
