SHERBURNE – Amelia L. Newman, 90, formerly of Sherburne and Oneida, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008 at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare in New Hartford.
She was born April 1, 1917 in Utica, a daughter of Kalill and Mary Jaytanie and received her education in Utica schools. Amelia married Robert A. Newman in Sherburne who predeceased her in 1987. Mrs. Newman had been employed at the Utica Knitting Mill in Utica and Sherburne. By working closely with state legislators, she was instrumental in establishing the ARC (Alternatives, Resources, Choices, formerly called the Association for Retarded Children) of the Chenango Valley to enhance services for individuals with disabilities. Her favorite pastime was gardening.
Mrs. Newman was of the Catholic faith. She was formerly a communicant of St. Malachy’s Church in Sherburne, and later St. Helena’s Church in Sherrill.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, David and Francine Newman of Sarasota, Fla.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Norene and Robert Bone of Buckeye, Ariz. and Kathy Newman of New Hartford; a sister and brother-in-law, Libby and John Lewis of Encino, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Betty Jaytanie; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Wahebee, and a brother, George Jaytanie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday from St. Malachy’s Church, Sherburne.
Spring interment will be in St. Malachy’s Cemetery, Sherburne.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. St. Malachy’s Altar and Rosary Society will recite the rosary at 6:45 p.m.
