Helen Race


OXFORD – Helen C. Race, 93, of Mount Dora, Fla., formerly of Oxford, passed away on January 4, 2008 at Florida Hospital-Waterman, Tavares, Fla. 
She was born on March 17, 1914 in Sidney, the daughter of the late Frank and Edith (Stevens) Schlafer. On April 17, 1938 she married Robert J. Race, who died on Sept. 6, 1978.
She is survived by her children, Edward and Velma Race of Madera, Calif., Robert and Joanne Race of Umatilla, Fla., Dr. David and Sally Race of Lexington, Kent., Steven and Linda Race of Mt. Dora, Fla., Mary Lou and David Kurz of Cherokee Village, Ark.; her brothers, Donald Schlafer of Bainbridge, and Pershing and Vida Schlafer of Bainbridge.  Twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
She retired in 1979 as a dietician from the Lake County Schools.  She was a past president of the Florida and National High School Food Association.
Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford on Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. A graveside service will be held immediately following the visitation in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.
