OXFORD – Ermelinda Segalini Mazzocchi, 82, died peacefully at home the morning of Friday, Jan. 11, 2008. Born on Feb. 25, 1925 to Fortunato and Cherina Segalini of Aglio, Italy, she lived there with her older brother Franchesco and younger sister Primina (both deceased) until 1946. That year she married Lawrence Mazzocchi of New York City and moved to the United States.
Ermelinda and Lawrence settled in Oxford, where they initially ran a poultry farm. Ermelinda raised three children, managed a well-run home and was employed as a housekeeper. She made superb homemade ravioli, tended a beautiful garden, enjoyed sewing and fully relished betting at both harness racing and casinos.
Ermelinda’s beloved husband, Lawrence, died July 30, 1999. She continued to reside in Oxford until January 2004, where upon she lived with her daughter and son-in-law Grace and Ralph (Skip) Moon.
Ermelinda is survived by three children: Francis Mazzocchi of Atlanta, Ga; Grace Moon of Mebane, N.C.; and Sherry Mazzocchi of New York. Also surviving are two nephews and one niece. Ermelinda’s enduring legacy encompasses five grand children and eight great grand children. Her kind and indomitable spirit lives on in them.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to a local hospice organization. A private memorial will be held at a later date.
McClure Funeral Service of Mebane, N.C. is in charge of arrangements.
