Consuelo Mooney
NORWICH – Consuelo Scott Mooney was born Jan. 6, 1919, in Binghamton, to William H. and Genevieve Riley Scott. She died on March 1, 2008, in South Bend, Indiana.
Connie married Edward L. Mooney on Oct. 23, 1948. Connie and Ed were married for more than 59 years and spent most of their married life in Norwich, where they raised their three children, Carol Ann Mooney, Nancy Mooney McCarter, and Scott Edward Mooney. Connie, like Ed, was devoted to her children and her community. Connie loved numbers and “figuring” and instilled in her children a love of learning. In Norwich, she was a member of Saint Paul’s Parish and her faith was the core of her strength and a source of great joy and consolation to her throughout her life. She worked tirelessly as a member and leader of the Saint Paul’s School Mothers’ Club and served as Girl Scout Leader, Den Mother, member of the Altar and Rosary Society, and in countless ways gave of herself to make her community a better one. Connie was always ready to help others. In summers, her house overflowed with nieces and nephews. Friends and strangers alike were the beneficiaries of her acts of kindness. She respected and loved everyone because of her deep understanding that each person is a child of God. Her goodness was quiet and humble and her generosity of heart made her loved by many. Indeed her love spilled over to animals, including her cherished collie dogs and a fascination with birds.
Connie was survived by her husband, Edward, of Notre Dame, Indiana; by two daughters, Carol Ann Mooney (South Bend, Ind.) and her husband, George Efta, and Nancy Mooney McCarter (Jupiter, Fla.); and by seven grandchildren: Elizabeth Mooney Efta, Christine Mooney Efta and her husband, Kevin Fortner, Caitlin Mooney Efta, Valerie Mooney Efta, Jennifer Lauren Mooney, Katharine Michelle Mooney, and Allison Nicole Mooney. Connie was also survived by her nieces and nephews: Judy and Gary Severson, Rhea Scott and Paul Dietzel, Mary Ellen Henry, Martin and Marilou Henry, Rosemary and Robert Herbert, Ellen and Jim Klubber, and Ruth and Ed Kearns. She was preceded in death by her sisters Rosemary Scott and Genevieve Henry, by her son Scott Mooney, and by her nephew, William Scott. She loved all of these people, but most especially her beloved husband, Edward, who was and still remains first in her heart. The loss of her son, Scott, was the greatest single pain of her life. She bore that pain with dignity, but without ever losing the emotion that is the outgrowth of tender love.
A Mass of Resurrection for Connie will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from St. Paul’s Catholic Church. The Rev. Douglas Cunningham will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in St. Paul’s Cemetery.
Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Saturday morning in the Marian Chapel of St. Paul’s Church from 10 to 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Consuelo and Edward Mooney Scholarship Fund, St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana, 46556.
