Ralph Jeffords


OXFORD – Ralph U. Jeffords, 90, of Oxford, passed away on March 10, 2008.  He was born in Whitney Point, on May 22, 1917. On April 16, 1943 in the Methodist Church of Fayetteville, N.C. he married Marian Robinson, who passed away on Oct. 20, 1991.
He is survived by his son Robert Jeffords of Oxford; his nieces, Mary Jeffords, Susan Jeffords and his nephew, Harry Jeffords.  His special friend, Julia Sinclair and the his care providers, Barb and Bill Sabines, Heather Sabines and Josh Neer and sons, Nicki, Liam and Killian Uriah, Bill Sabines, Jr. and Meghan Golliver and her mom Audrey Golliver, Crystal Sabines and son Logan, Dottie Armstrong and Jerry Merchant, Evelyn and George Sabines, Deb and Norm Wiggins and kids, Tami Meyers and a very extended family.
Ralph was raised in Whitney Point. He served in the U.S. Army, 101st Airborne during World War II, and participated in the battles at Normandy, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes. He received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.  He also received the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the European-African-Middle Easter Service Medal.
He moved to Oxford and worked at the Review-Times until his appointment by President Dwight Eisenhower as Postmaster in Oxford in 1954. He served as Postmaster until his retirement. He was a co-founder of the Oxford Emergency Squad and taught American Red Cross First Aid to many students. He was an honorary member of the Oxford Emergency Squad and the Oxford Fire Department. He was a member of the Lake Ludlow Club. He was named Citizen of the Year by the Oxford Lions Club. He served several terms as a Trustee of the Village of Oxford. He was a 60 year member of Fort Hill Post #376 American Legion of Oxford and served as Commander and on many committees.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 13 at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford with the Rev. Allen C. Lang, pastor of the United Church of Oxford officiating. Burial with full military honors accorded by members of Fort Hill Post will be in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.
Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford on Thursday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made the Oxford Emergency Squad.
