Leo Collier


NORWICH – Leo F. Collier, age 91, a resident of Summerville at HillenVale in Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away on Friday evening, May 2, 2008 at the Knox Community Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Leo was born on April 16, 1917 in Norwich, Chenango County, New York, a son of the late Eugene P. and Julia (Farrell) Collier.  Leo was a graduate of Norwich High School in Norwich, and attended the University of Alabama for two years.  Leo served in the United States Army from 1941-1945 in the 29th Division, landing at Omaha Beach on D-Day, and serving in the Battle of the Bugle.  He married Kathryn R. (Natoli) Collier in 1946.  She preceded in death in November 2006.
Leo had been a resident of Mount Vernon since 1949.  He was a member of Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon.  Leo was a member and past president of the Downtown Toastmasters Club, past president of Phillips Park Little League Baseball, and enjoyed participating in the Mount Vernon Hiking Club.  Most of all, Leo enjoyed riding his bicycle daily.
 Leo worked for Western-Southern Life Insurance Company, Schlairet Trucking, Terminal Transport and retired from American Freight System in 1983.           
Surviving Leo are six sons and three daughters, Kathleen (Mike) Williamson of Ronceverte, W. Va.; Charles “Hop” (Cindy) Collier of North Canton; Mike (Jodi) Collier of Boon, MI; Joseph Collier (Henry Regis) of Worcester; Jim (Mary) Collier of San Diego, Calif.; Christine Collier of Cincinnati; John Collier of Lafayette, Ind.; Julia Collier (Rob Bryan) of Cincinnati; and Thom (Diane) Collier of Mount Vernon; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren; brother, Donald Collier of Norwich; and a sister, Catherine Helen Harrington of Rensselaer.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Leo was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters, Eugene Glenn Collier, Edward Kenneth Collier, Rose Margaret (Collier) Scott, and Patricia Ann (Collier) Carnrike
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 East High St., Mount Vernon, Ohio
A Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon with Rev. Father Mark J. Hammond and Rev. Father F. Richard Snoke as Celebrants. Burial will follow in the Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens with military services provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
