NORWICH – Dorris E. Lyon, 95, formerly of Birdsall Street and Tyner, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2008 at the New York State Veterans’ Home in Oxford.
Born Aug. 17, 1912 in Norwich, Dorris was the daughter of George F. and Ethel (Wheeler) Godfrey. She attended the Norwich schools and worked at Norwich Mills, the Norwich Shoe Factory and Scintilla in Sidney before moving to Tyner where she lovingly cared for a total of twenty-two handicapped children in her home. She retired during the late 1970s.
Dorris was a member of the First Baptist Church of Norwich. Known for her lively sense of humor, she loved to dance and travel and also enjoyed knitting during her spare time. Dorris enjoyed life, was loved by all who met her and will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.
Dorris was the widow of George Lyon. She is survived by her sister, Cleora Shepardson and her husband, Fran, of Lakeland, Fla. and five nephews and their wives, John and Susan Rowan of Hixson, Tenn., Greg and Marguerite Godfrey of Middletown, Gordon and Susan Godfrey of Arlington, Va., Gerald Godfrey of Binghamton and Garth and Diane Godfrey of Ruby. Many grandnieces and grandnephews also survive. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Celia Rowan and Hazel Godfrey as well as her brother, George Godfrey. The family sincerely appreciates the exceptional care provided by Dorris’ extended family at the Veterans Home.
Funeral services for Dorris will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Wilson Funeral Home. Rev. Allen Lang, pastor of the United Church of Oxford, will officiate. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
