NORWICH – John Leo Alishauskas Sr. passed away June 9, 2008 in Stuart, Florida.
John L. Alishauskas was born in Binghamton, on April 2, 1928 to Genevieve (Jenny) and John Alishauskas. He was a graduate of Johnson City High School and he served in the 15th Air Corps during World War II and the Korean Action. Following this he spent 2 years at Champlain College in Plattsburg studying engineering.
John was married in 1951 to Dorothy Karalunas, who worked as the School Nurse –Teacher in South New Berlin School for 2 years and for the New Berlin School for 21 years. They have three children; a daughter, Lynne (John) Walton who works for P&G in Cincinnati, OH, John II (Majel) who manages J.J. Alishauskas, Inc. and does trucking, and Michael (Cindy) who works for P&G R&D in Norwich. John and Dorothy have 11 grandchildren; John Jason Alishauskas, Chad Alishauskas, Abby Alishauskas, Aaron Alishauskas, Sara Alishauskas, Jordan Alishauskas, Ryan Alishauskas, Adam Alishauskas, Laura Alishauskas, Judy Alishauskas, Martin Walton, and one great-grandchild Gregory John Braedyn Alishauskas.
John has had experience in numerous occupations; construction, production foreman at Conn Instrument Co., T.A.C.O., Morton-Norwich, Scintilla Bendix, and the Sheffield Company. In 1951, John was the manager of the Eagle Inn, New Berlin, NY for 3 years. He spent the next 23 years in the bowling business as proprietor of John’s Bowl-O-Drome. John taught bowling classes to handicapped and regular physical education students from the local schools. He formed an agriculture business with his oldest son and was President of J.J. Alishauskas, Inc.
His service to the community has been through 24 years membership in the New Berlin Volunteer Fire Dept. He was also active in the New Berlin Emergency Squad. John was a member of the American Legion and the New Berlin Rotary Club. He served as president of the New Berlin Rotary Club in 1970. John was also elected to New Berlin Town Supervisor and served for three years as President of the Board of Supervisors in Chenango County.
