SHERBURNE – Elaine B. Humphrey, formerly of Sherburne, died at her home in North Port, Fla. on June 22, 2008.
Elaine was born in Amityville on Nov. 13, 1932, daughter of Thomas H. and Gertrude (James) Ballam. She graduated from Sherburne Central School in 1950 and attended Munson Williams Proctor Institute in Utica. Elaine was a telephone operator at Chenango and Unadilla until they automated in 1952. On December 26, 1953, Elaine married her high school sweetheart, Donald T. Humphrey.
Elaine was employed as a teller for National Bank & Trust Co. in Sherburne, and also in Arlington, Va. She worked in payroll for TACO, as a secretary for Sherburne Council of Churches, and as an accounts payable clerk for Norwich City Schools. The couple retired in 1994 and spent winters in North Port beginning in 1995 and resided there permanently in 1999. Don predeceased her in July 2001. Elaine was a very creative and talented person who enjoyed many hobbies and spending time with friends and family. She will forever be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.
Elaine was a member of the First United Methodist Church and American Legion Post #876 Auxiliary in Sherburne
Elaine is survived by her son, Brent (Elaine) Humphrey and their children, Savannah and Mariah of Goose Creek, S.C.; and her daughter Lorraine (Rory) McTarnaghan and their children, Kelsey and Brennen of West Henrietta; three brothers, Thomas Ballam and Timothy Ballam of Endicott, Terry Ballam of Meredith, NH; and her sister June Lazerri of Archbald, Pa. as well as several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 5, with Pastor George Gallendorm officiating. Committal service will follow at West Hill Cemetery.
