CINCINNATUS – John L. Hurlburt, Sr., 73, formerly of Cincinnatus, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse, after a long illness.
John was born in Guilford on August 19, 1934, a son of Jesse and Nora Lockwood Hurlburt. For several years he was a self-employed scrap hauler in the Cincinnatus area. He would often have many people stop by to see him for parts which he always seemed to have on hand. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Air Force. He enjoyed the outdoors and camping.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Beverly Benedict Hurlburt of Cortland; three sons, John, Jr. (Nancy) of Oxford, Jeffrey (Terry) of Marathon, and Jerrold (Christina) of Cuyler; and three daughters, Roxanne (David) Hotaling of Solon, Lisa (Brian) Davis of McGraw, and Renee (Theodore) Hammond of McGraw. He also leaves behind his mother, Nora Hurlburt of Oxford, a brother, Jesse (Jane) Hurlburt of Bainbridge, an aunt, Nettie Lockwood of Guilford, 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by two grandsons, Jason L. Hurlburt and Mark Wellauer; and two brothers, James and Joseph Hurlburt.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, with Reverend Palmer Neumeister officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.
