NORWICH – Donald Kenneth Haynes, PhD., 74, of E. Niagara St., Duluth, Minn., passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2008 in St. Luke’s Hospice.
He was born in Norwich on Jan. 27, 1934 to Raymond and Gladys (Simmons) Haynes.
Don was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict, stationed in Germany. Prior to moving to Duluth, Minn., he worked for the New York State Dept. of Health and then at State University of New York (SUNY) Brockport, as a lecturer. He moved to Duluth, Minn. in 1982 and taught at the University of Minnesota in the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Dept. He loved teaching and was impressed by the quality of students at UMD. He coached the UMD women’s tennis team for a few years. Don retired in May 1999 as an Associate Professor. Following retirement, Don loved playing golf, enjoyed reading and watching sports on TV. He was an avid Twins and Vikings fan.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Thomas.
He is survived by his wife, Janet; his son Bradley Richard of Duluth, Minn.; his daughter, Linda Ruth (Raymond) Slowik of Royal Oak, Mich.; his grandchildren Anna, John and Donald Slowik; his brother, Robert (Jean) of Norwich; his mother-in-law, Beatrice Shultz and his brothers-in-law Doug and Gary Shultz, all of Geneva.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Aug. 4 from 6 p.m. until the 7 p.m. memorial service at Dougherty Funeral Home.
