NORWICH – Angelo ‘Buddy’ Spano, 71, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008 at Chenango Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Angelo was born April 13, 1937 in Norwich, the son of Antonio C. Spano and Grace M. (Biviano) Spano, both deceased. Angelo was an Army veteran, having served his country during the Vietnam Conflict. Upon graduating from Albany Business College, he was employed as an auditor at the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, retiring after 25 years of service in 1994. Before his illness, he enjoyed leisure hours in his wood working shop, golfing and gardening.
Angelo lived in Norwich all his life, was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Church and a member of the Knight of Columbus. He was a staunch supporter of the Syracuse University football team and was a season ticket holder for years. He attended games on his scooter accompanied by his loyal friend and aide, Karen.
He is survived by his brother John and his wife Anne of Madison, Ohio, nieces Annette Oakes of Midway Ohio, Lisa Spano Yeoman of Thompson, Ohio, Beverly Tobin of Albany, Anne Marie Shepherd of Dover, Del., Mary Anne Wells of Somerville, Mass., nephews John Spano, Jr. of Dallas, Texas and Joseph DiStefano of Lausanne, Switzerland.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Bartholomew’s Church, with Rev. Douglas Cunningham, pastor, officiating. Friends may call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Friday evening from 4 to 7 p.m.
Contributions in Angelo’s memory may be made to the Memorial Fund at St. Bartholomew’s Church.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Cook and nurses of the ICU of Chenango Memorial Hospital who cared for Angelo with such care and compassion and the residents and staff of the Veterans Home at Oxford, NY for their friendship and kindness which meant so much to Angelo. A very special thanks to Sister Sheena for the spiritual love and care she bestowed on Angelo during his long illness.
