McDONOUGH – Genevieve Rhodes Purdy, 96, of 11 East Augusta Place, Greenville, S.C . died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008 at NHC Mauldin.
Born May 7, 1912 in Franklin, she was the daughter of the late Ervin S. and Bertha Barber Rhodes. She graduated from the State University of New York at Oneonta. She taught for 9 years in the McDonough and Oxford schools. She worked with the American Red Cross assisting families in bringing military personnel home for emergencies. She was active in Calvary Episcopal Church in McDonough as a member of the Alter Guild and choir. She was known to be a talented seamstress and made several of the church’s alter hangings and banners for the McDonough fire department.
She is survived by her loving husband of 70 years David Purdy, sons David and his wife Lois of Chesterfield, Mo. and John Purdy and his wife Linda of Mauldin, S.C., sisters Caroline Reid of Bridgewater, Va. and Inez and her husband James Huftalen of
Hendersonville, N.C. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Heather and Dustin Rash, Julie and Matthew Westra, Michele and Paul Jensen, and Jennifer and John Hart. She is also survived by six great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her brother Richard and his wife Gertrude.
A memorial service will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, 2008.
