NORWICH – Ruth Rockwell Lewis was the ninth child of Martha and Ralph Lewis. She was born on Dec. 22, 1922 in the family home on Prospect Street, in Huntington. Ruth passed to her eternal garden on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 1:40 p.m. at Gilmour Nursing facility where she has resided for the past few years. Ruth spent her last days surrounded by her family and many loving caregivers.
She was married to Victor Misilewich for sixty-six years at the time of his death. They had moved to Norwich to retire in 1996. Ruth leaves three children. Victor Michael Misilewich, and his wife Laureen of Franklinton, N.C., David Lewis Misilewich, and his wife Phyllis of National Park, N.J. and Martha Romahn and her husband Norman of Norwich. She was a loving grandmother to eight grandchildren; Patricia A. and Joseph M. children of Michael. David A., Jennifer A, Catherine A. and Charlene A. children of David, and Amanda Utter and Melissa Azzarello, daughters of Martha. Ruth was blessed with eight great-grandchildren: Alex J., Sydney K., William J., Nicholas V., Alyssa L., Victoria J., Madison M., and Isaac D. Kai-Li was her only great-great grandchild, daughter of Alex.
Ruth was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in connection with the Ketewamoke Chapter, by virtue of her decent from Jacob Grantier, who was a soldier during the Revolutionary War.
Ruth was a very talented woman all her life. Her artistic ability brought her hours of pleasure. She was extremely proud to tell the story of her family relation with the famous Norman Rockwell, where she inherited her love of art. Before she lost her sight to Macular Degeneration, Ruth was involved in all forms of art including oil painting, watercolors, sketching, ceramics, crafts, doll making and sewing! She loved making her grandchildren beautiful outfits and costumes that have been handed down thru generations. Ruth only got her driving license at the age of 64, so she could drive to her ceramic classes where she earned many awards and ribbons. Her family will forever value all the beautiful creations she has left them.
Ruth was an active member of Saint Hugh of Lincoln Catholic church in Huntington, and St. Paul’s here in Norwich. She sang in the choir of Saint Hughes on many blessed occasions. Ruth made a lasting impression on all who met her with her sense of humor and quick wit. “Ruthie” was a character that most would not forget after they dealt with her. All who cared for her at Chenango Memorial Hospital and Gilmour Health Care Facility loved her.
