Hammet Martin


PITTSFIELD – Hammet “Lee” Martin, 79, of Pittsfield, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2009 in the Wilson Memorial Hospital of Johnson City.
He was born Jan. 31, 1930 in Mt. Vernon, the son of William Hammet & Alice (Waters) Martin. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Martin.
Lee was a graduate of Amityville High School and attended Farmingdale College for two years, where he studied electrical technology. He was a Union Electrician and member of the Local Union #25 IBEW, Melville.
He was an 18-year member of the Copiague Volunteer Fire Department and EMT. He was also a volunteer medic for Copiague Youth League Sports and a member of the New Berlin and Pittsfield Fire Departments. He served in the U.S. Navy 82nd Air Born Division from 1949-1956 and was a member of the West Babylon American Legion Post.
Besides his wife, Joyce, Lee is survived by 12 children: Lynne of Amity Harbor, Jay of Middle Island, Jimmy of Oneonta, Scott of Georgia, Chris of Virginia, Blake of California, Brett of Florida, Tommy of West Oneonta, Bonnie of Florida, Wendy of Idaho, Joycelyn of New Berlin and Hammet Jr. of Florida.
He is also survived by 47 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, New Berlin, with Reverend Charles Taylor officiating.
Interment will be in the Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla.
Memorial donations may be made to the New Berlin Fire Department or Pittsfield Fire Department.
Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home LP, New Berlin.
