SHERBURNE – Mary Veronica Hinkley Postiglion, 93 years, of Williams Rd., passed away Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the New York State Veterans’ Home, Oxford.
Born May 9, 1915 in Brookfield, she was a daughter of Oliver and Katherine Schneider Hinkley. The family moved to Sherburne in 1932, and Mary graduated from Sherburne High School in 1933. She attended Cortland County School of Nursing and graduated in 1937 with a RN Degree. She joined the U.S. Naval Reserve, serving in World War II from Aug. 31, 1943 until March 9, 1946 and the Korean Conflict from May 21, 1951 until Oct. 20, 1952, and retired from the service in 1957 with the rank of Lieutenant. Mary had worked at Cortland County Hospital, Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich, Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton, and had operated the Earlville Nursing Home for 9 years.
On Oct. 27, 1956, Mary was united in marriage to Rocco (Rocky) Postiglion in Sherburne. Together, they operated the North Star Hotel in Inlet, for 17 years. Mrs. Postiglion was a member of St. Malachy of Armagh Catholic Church in Sherburne.
Mary is survived by a daughter, Linda Postiglion of Fulton; a grandson, Angelo Sacco of North Syracuse; two granddaughters, Julia Fritcher of Syracuse and Renee Nuzzo of Mexico; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Pvt. Oliver Hinkley, USMC, killed in WWII, David and Charles, and three sisters, Katherine Maynard, Caroline Pavalka and Anna Kraham; her husband, Rocky Postiglion, and her son, Edward Postiglion.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday from St. Malachy’s Church, East State St., Sherburne, followed by interment with military honors in St. Malachy’s Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
