NORWICH – Martha Ireland Benedict, 94 1/2, passed away April 28, 2009. 
Born Nov. 6, 1914, Martha and husband, musician Leland (who predeceased her in 1996), lived in Norwich all their lives until Martha moved to California at age 89 to be near their daughter. Martha was an active member of the Broad St. Methodist Church, Eastern Star Chapter #365 and band assistant for the Norwich City Band, Smyrna Community Band and Chenango County 4-H band. She was well known for her weaving, china painting and craft making.    
She is survived by her son, Stanley Benedict, of Norwich; daughter, Rev. Beverly Schlagel; son-in-law Henry Schlagel; grandson, Daniel McDaniel; great-grandchildren: Tiffany Amber and Branden James, all of Vacaville, Calif.
A memorial service will be conducted by her daughter at the Broad Street Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. Monday. The Eastern Star Officers will also participate. Burial will be at Sylvan Lawn in Greene.
